GOLF

The Team Activities for Special Kids golf program focuses on the golf skills of grip, swing patterns, driving and putting.  The program consists of 45-minute sessions. Throughout the six weeks, athletes alternate between using the driving range, practice putting greens and a miniature golf course.  A station approach is used to focus on the skills listed above. The sixth week is spent at a golf course where the athletes have the opportunity to transfer the skills learned to actual course play. Golf clubs and other equipment are provided for athlete use; however, athletes can bring their own. See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

BOWLING SESSION 1 (SPRING)

The Team Activities for Special Kids bowling program is a six-week league where athletes learn and practice the basic skills of bowling. Bowling is one of the three individual sports that TASK offers.  It is a sport that athletes can play for a lifetime with a group or individually. For the TASK bowling season, athletes are divided into teams according to age and ability levels and each receives a team shirt.  Modifications for athletes are made on an individual basis for each athlete to succeed and learn about the game.   Bowling ramps and gutter guards are available for those who need them.  All are invited to participate no matter what their experience or ability level.  At the end of the bowling season, each athlete is presented a trophy recognizing his or her effort, hard work and success. See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

SUMMER

SOFTBALL PROGRAMS

The Team Activities for Special Kids tee ball, coach pitch and softball league programs focus on skills needed to play softball. This program is divided into three different skill levels.  The three programs are modified as needed to promote safety and success.  All programs meet for an hour.  Teams are chosen according to age and ability levels and all players will receive a tee shirt that they are asked to wear each week.  This program takes place during the summer months.  See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

Tee Ball

This program is for the beginning ballplayer.  Athletes work on the basic skills of throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and base running.  All ball players participate in game situations and hit a ball off of a tee.

Coach Pitch

This league is designed for the intermediate ballplayer.  Athletes continue to work on the basic skills, but instead of hitting a ball off of a tee, they hit a ball pitched by a coach.

Modified Softball

The program is designed for the more advanced ballplayer.  Again, athletes continue to work on the skills of the sport.  We introduce pitching skills at this level and the athletes do the pitching in our games.  We follow standard softball rules, playing three outs.  However, batters are allowed five strikes instead of three.

KARATE

TASK Karate is taught by a certified karate instructor. The program will focus on basic self defense, eye, hand and foot coordination, balance, agility and basic body space awareness. Karate runs for six weeks and is open to all Silver and Gold Members.  See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

KICKBALL

Kickball will be run like many other TASK team sports.  Athletes are divided into teams based on age and ability.  This program focuses on understanding of the basic rules, kicking a moving ball, throwing, catching, game play and team work.  Kickball runs for six weeks. See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

SUMMER CAMP AND SWIMMING LESSONS

The Team Activities for Special Kids summer camp program is a one-week day camp offered to kids with special physical and mental concerns. The focus of the camp is on functional, recreational skills.  In order to attend TASK Camp, camper must have participated in a previous TASK activity.  Familiarity with your child will help us to meet his or her specific needs at camp. Campers receive shirts that they are asked to wear every day. Throughout the week campers participate in a variety of activities including craft projects, swimming, bike riding, soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball, water fun and fishing.  The TASK summer camp provides the campers the opportunity to increase skills in the areas that they can generalize into their everyday lives as well as work on social interaction and making friends.  Each camper takes home many projects, an award and many special memories.  In the past, camp activities have included, swimming, visits from an Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale, Fredbird and the bicycle police.  Campers have made tee shirts, hats, picture frames, games and many other crafts.  Camp generally runs the first week of August (although some years it varies).

TASK swimming lessons are combined with and taught during the week of TASK Summer Camp.  Swimmers rotate through a variety of stations focusing on underwater swim, floats, basic strokes and treading water.  Classes will last about 45 minutes and the rest of the swim time is designated as "free swim".  We meet each swimmer at the level they are at.  Below is a brief description of our levels.

Terrified of water:  This level is for kids who have a fear of water and/or do not like to swim at all.  Skills to be worked on include introduction of water through water play and beginning kicking and arm strokes.

Beginners:  This group is for the beginning swimmer.  Skills to be worked on include floating, kicking, introduction to underwater swim, treading water and introduction to some basic strokes as well as jumping off the diving board.

Intermediate:  This group is for those swimmers who have had some experience with lessons or basic strokes, but need to fine tune their skills.  Skills to be worked on include different kicks, front crawl stroke, backstroke and underwater swim as well as basic diving.

Advanced:  This is for those swimmers who know their basic strokes.  Skills to be worked on include front crawl stroke, backstroke (longer distances), breaststroke, underwater swim and diving off the board.

FALL

SOCCER

Team Activities for Special Kids has an outdoor soccer program were athletes meet once a week for one-hour sessions. Teams are determined according to age levels and the abilities of the different players. TASK soccer focuses on skills including dribbling, shooting, goal keeping, throw-ins and teamwork; it also increases fitness and stamina for each player. Thirty minutes of the session is spent developing these skills.  The remaining 30 minutes are spent playing a soccer game where athletes get to put their skills into practice in game situations.  Athletes are divided into teams according to age and ability levels and they receive a team shirt.  Modifications for athletes are made on an individual basis so that each athlete can succeed and learn about the game.  The soccer season usually begins in September.  See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

VOLLEYBALL

TASK volleyball runs six consecutive weeks for one hour each session.  Because volleyball is a fairly challenging sport, we will be using a variety of balls (beach, volleyball trainers, Nerf, etc.) to suit the level of the player.   We work on the basic volleyball skills of serving, volleying, team play and the rules.  In addition to modification of equipment, we  will also be  modifying the rules of the sport a little so that all who play achieve success. The volleyball season usually begins in early September and ends in October.   See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

SOCIAL CLUB

TASK has helped many kids gain confidence and build self-esteem through the multiple sporting opportunities offered. With each new season, not only do the kids improve their sport skills, but many have also built relationships and found new buddies through each season of events. As parents of these terrific kids, we've all seen the smiles and fun the kids have when together out on the field, on the golf course or in the bowling alley. Many parents have recognized a need for increased socialization among the kids. You have also expressed interest and a willingness to be a part of making this happen.   All of your efforts, time and hard work have contributed to the successful beginning of the TASK Social Club.   See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.

KIDS' CLUB

A younger version of the Teenage Social Club, Kids' Club is for athletes 12 years of age and younger.  We meet one Friday a month and enjoy socializing during a variety of activities. All athletes 12 and under are invited to participate.  Check out the upcoming events section in your newsletter or see the calendar page on this web site.   See calendar page for specific events, times, location and dates.
